Anaerobic digestion of biowaste and dewatered digestate production

This technology transforms source-separated biowaste into multiple valuable outputs, including biomethane, biogenic CO₂ and a certified soil amendment in the form of solid digestate.

From clean biowaste to energy, CO₂ and soil nutrients – the process

The process combines anaerobic digestion, gas upgrading and nutrient recovery in several integrated steps:

  1. Collection and pre-treatment
    Biowaste is collected, inspected and cleaned to remove impurities such as plastics, metals and inert materials. The material is then shredded and homogenised.
  2. Anaerobic digestion (AD)
    The prepared feedstock is processed in mesophilic digesters, where microorganisms break down organic matter to produce biogas and digestate.
  3. Biogas upgrading to biomethane
    The biogas is purified and upgraded to biomethane, which is injected into the natural gas grid for use in heating, industry or transport.
  4. Biogenic CO₂ recovery
    During the upgrading process, a CO₂-rich stream is captured, purified and liquefied to produce biogenic CO₂ for industrial applications.
  5. Digestate separation and stabilisation
    The digestate is separated into a solid and liquid fraction. The solid fraction is stabilised and matured to produce a high-quality soil amendment suitable for agricultural use.

The facility integrates heat recovery systems and automated monitoring, ensuring efficient and stable operation.

 

This process generates three key outputs:

  • Biomethane, a renewable energy source injected into the gas grid
  • Biogenic CO₂, recovered and reused in industrial applications
  • Certified soil amendment from the solid digestate

The soil amendment contains organic matter and essential nutrients that support soil fertility. It meets strict quality standards, including low levels of contaminants and impurities, making it suitable for agricultural use.
