Anaerobic digestion of food industry residues (e.g. potato waste) and dewatered digestate production

This technology uses anaerobic digestion (AD) to transform industrial organic waste, such as potato residues and other food industry by-products, into renewable energy and nutrient-rich fertiliser.

By processing high-moisture, starch-rich waste streams, the system ensures stable biogas production while recovering valuable nutrients for agricultural use.

From food industry residues to energy and fertiliser – the process

The process is based on anaerobic digestion and resource recovery and includes the following steps:

  1. Reception and pre-treatment
Organic waste from the food industry is collected and prepared for processing.
  2. Anaerobic digestion (AD)
The material is processed in sealed digesters, where microorganisms break it down and produce biogas rich in methane.
  3. Energy production
The biogas is used on-site to generate renewable electricity. The heat produced is recovered and converted into steam and process water for industrial use.
  4. Digestate recovery
The remaining material (digestate) is stabilised.

The final product

In addition, the process produces:

  • Renewable electricity
  • Recovered heat, steam and process water for industrial applications
