Hydrolysis of sewage sludge and food waste for liquid mineral concentrate production

This technology uses a physical-chemical hydrolysis process to convert wastewater biosolids and organic waste into a liquid fertiliser. By breaking down complex organic materials, it produces a pathogen-free and easy-to-handle product suitable for agricultural use.

The process supports full resource recovery, turning waste streams into valuable inputs for soil health and crop production.

Transforming biosolids into a liquid fertiliser – the process

The process combines thermal, chemical and mechanical treatment to transform organic waste:

  1. Feedstock input and preparation
Biosolids and similar organic wastes from industrial, commercial and agricultural sources are prepared for treatment.
  2. Physical-chemical hydrolysis
The material undergoes a patented process involving high-speed shearing, alkali addition and low-pressure steam injection which breaks down microbial cell walls and converts complex organic compounds into simpler, more accessible forms.

Product transformation
The result is a homogeneous, low-viscosity liquid with a relatively high solids content (around 13–16%), which remains fully pumpable using standard equipment.

The final product

The main product is a liquid fertiliser with balanced nutrients and organic matter:

  • Macronutrients (NPK on dry matter basis): approximately 4.5 – 7 – 2.5
  • Micronutrients: including sulphur, calcium, iron and magnesium
  • Organic matter: supporting soil structure, water retention and microbial activity

The fertiliser meets recognised quality standards in United States and Canada markets.
