Liquid digestate valorisation through biological treatment and membrane filtration

This technology combines biological treatment and advanced membrane filtration to recover nutrients from digestate and produce valuable fertilising products.

Recovering nutrients with biological and membrane treatment – the process

The integrated system includes:

  • Anaerobic digestion (AD) of livestock manure, animal-by-products such as slaughter house waste, food waste and cheese whey
  • Solid–liquid separation of the digestate
  • Biological treatment (MBBR) of the liquid digestate fraction to reduce organic load and nitrogen
  • Ultrafiltration membrane reactor (UF-MBR) to remove solids and microorganisms
  • Concentration of nutrients for product formation
  • Pasteurization and stabilization of the solid organic fraction

The final product

  • Biostimulant

A nutrient-rich organic amendment (solid): These products are reported to be suitable for agriculture, including greenhouse and open-field applications.
