FertiCovery Open Forum Event at KOS 2026

As part of the 13th International Conference on Sustainable Solid Waste Management on the Kos Island, Greece (24-28 June 2026), the FertiCovery project hosted a hybrid Open Forum Event to showcase its work on best available technologies for bio-based fertilising products from secondary raw materials.

The Open Forum event brought together project partners and external experts to showcase the project’s latest progress and exchange knowledge on bio-based fertilising products. The programme featured presentations on the overall objectives of FertiCovery, the methodology used to identify the 25 best available technologies, standards and validation for fertilising products, the composition and microbiological safety of bio-based fertilisers, germination testing, and practical examples of nutrient recovery and bio-based fertiliser production from industry and SMEs.

The event created valuable opportunities for dialogue between researchers, policymakers, industry representatives, SMEs and other stakeholders. Discussions highlighted the importance of collaboration across the entire value chain, from technology developers to farmers and public authorities, to support the transition towards circular and bio-based fertilisers. Participants also exchanged views on common challenges across Europe.

The Open Forum Event also helped expand the project’s stakeholder network by establishing new connections with industry, SMEs, farmer organisations and policymakers working on nutrient recovery and the circular economy. A key takeaway from the discussions was that while technical solutions for nutrient recovery are already available, their wider uptake depends on overcoming regulatory, financial and market barriers through continued collaboration and knowledge exchange.

The International Conference on Solid Waste Management aims to address the significant issue of sustainable solid waste management through the promotion of safe practices and effective technologies including anaerobic digestion and waste-to-energy. The Conference focuses mainly on modern solid waste technologies. It aims to stimulate the interest of scientists and citizens and inform them about the latest developments in the field of municipal solid waste management (read more here).
