Anaerobic digestion of manure and agro-food residues and digestate upgrading by evaporation and membrane filtration

This technology transforms digestate from anaerobic digestion into multiple fertiliser products through a combination of separation, evaporation and membrane filtration.

It is particularly suited for regions with high manure production, where nutrient management is a challenge.

Producing tailored fertilisers from digestate – the process

The process includes several integrated steps:

  1. Anaerobic digestion (AD)
Organic feedstock is processed to produce biogas and digestate.
  2. Solid–liquid separation
Digestate is divided into solid and liquid fractions.
  3. Evaporation of liquid fraction
Ammonia is removed and recovered, while water is separated.
  4. Reverse osmosis (RO)
The condensed water is purified to meet discharge standards.
  5. Drying of the solid fraction
  6. The solid fraction of the digestate is dried and it can be mixed with the evaporator concentrate to produce organic fertilizer product
  7. Product blending
Solid and liquid nutrient streams are combined to produce custom fertilisers.

The final products

  • Solid phosphorus-rich fertiliser
  • Nutrient concentrates (N, K, S)
  • Tailor-made fertiliser blends
